Drill, grinder or hammer drill: what irritates your neighbors?
What makes more noise: a drill, a saw or a hammer drill? Why do renovations irritate neighbors so much? Why do tools in reviews sound completely different from real life? Can a couple of extra decibels cause a large fine?
Today we will answer these questions: we will compile a hit parade of noisy power tools, figure out what determines their characteristic sound and find out how to do renovations so as not to become that "wonderful neighbor with a hammer drill".
The right to silence and quiet rest is declared by Federal Law 52 "On the sanitary and epidemiological well-being of the population". But there are no specific figures - permissible noise levels, time for construction work - in it. They are given in sanitary standards and local legislation, therefore they differ depending on the region.
So, in the "Sanitary and Epidemiological Requirements for Living Conditions in Residential Buildings and Premises" the basic values are recorded. During the day, noise should not exceed 55 decibels in residential areas and 70 decibels outside, near the house. At night, the limit is reduced by another 10 decibels - to 45 and 60, respectively. Let's focus on these numbers.
Let's listen to how popular power tools sound: a screwdriver, a drill, a hammer drill, an angle grinder, a circular saw, a grinder and compare them with the permissible noise level. First, we'll check them at idle, and then add a load: we'll drill, screw in screws, saw and grind.
