After expermenting with with various other traditionally mathrock / midwest emo tunings (including a few of my own) for that emotional tone, while I was playing slide guitar I found that the often overlooked Open D Tuning can be effective at conjuring similar vibes if you don't want to be as locked in with a specific feeling / chord extentions. Just working on some noodles. Enjoy!
