UniFi Protect Identifies You – Home Assistant Reacts (Person-Aware Automations)

In this video, I show you how to break free from faceless triggers and move into the future with person-aware automations. By combining UniFi Protect’s powerful face recognition with Home Assistant, your smart home can now react to who walks in the door.
With UniFi Protect configured to recognize known people, we can create an alarm that fires a webhook whenever a face match occurs. That webhook is sent straight into Home Assistant, where it triggers an automation tailored to the specific person. In my demo, when I arrive, Protect recognizes me, Home Assistant receives the webhook, and my smart home reacts instantly with a push notification and a smart speaker announcement: “Welcome home, Avi.”
This milestone is only possible because of the seamless integration between UniFi Protect and Home Assistant. Protect handles the identity recognition, while Home Assistant orchestrates the automations. Together, they elevate your smart home beyond simple motion sensors or geofencing, giving you true identity as a trigger. With this setup, every family member can have unique automations, personalized greetings, or security workflows.
