The Ilkhanate was a state founded by the Chinggisid Hulagu and ruled by his descendants; The official name of the Hulagu kingdom was Iranzamin (Iranian land). In Western historiography it is referred to as the Ilkhanate. Self-created by Hulagu during his conquest campaign (1256-1260), the state was recognized in 1261 by the Khan of the Mongol Empire Kublai, who granted Hulagu the title of Ilkhan ("khan of the tribe", meaning ulus khan). Before the accession of Ghazan (1295-1304), the Hulaguids recognized nominal dependence on the Great Khan (Emperor Yuan). The state, which was in a grave economic situation by the 1290s, extended its existence thanks to the reforms of Ghazan Khan, carried out by his minister Rashid ad-Din, but only until 1335. After the death of Ilkhan Abu Said (November 30, 1335), the powerless Ilkhans were enthroned only to legitimize the power of the new dynasties - the Chobanids and Jalayirids.
