Planned home birth is a very controversial and new topic in Brazil, to understand it you will need to watch this video until the end.
Before talking about the reasons that led me to choose a planned home birth, I will make some important considerations about this practice that still involves a lot of myth and prejudice in our society.
Planned home birth is a type of natural childbirth that takes place in the pregnant woman's home with a team prepared for this. And this means that there will be trained professionals to care for the mother and baby with equipment and structures for emergencies such as hemorrhage, respiratory problems, and even local anesthesia to perform the suture if there is laceration.
It is important to say that to have a home birth you need to have a healthy, low-risk pregnancy. Which is the case of my pregnancy, which had no complications. And preferably that the baby is in the cephalic position, that is, head down. Prenatal care must be done correctly, with all the necessary tests, especially those that detect the vaginal microbiota (if the mother has tested positive for Group B Streptococcus, for example, she will need to take an antibiotic to deliver vaginally). Therefore, prenatal care must be done correctly, and the pregnant woman and the baby must be healthy.
In short, to have a home birth, it is necessary to:
be a low-risk pregnancy
cephalic presentation (baby head down)
trained team. In our case, the team consists of 2 nurses (one obstetric nurse and one neonatologist nurse)
equipment necessary for a normal delivery with the same structure I would have in the hospital. Except for performing a cesarean section, which is where the next item comes in: having a hospital for transfer in case surgery is needed, having a hospital 20 or 30 minutes from your home.
