This lesson will look at how to use a free and open-source graphics editor known as GIMP (short for General Image Manipulation Program) to alter, enhance and colour photographs as part of the BEO Online Local Heritage Archives project.
GIMP has many powerful features such as combining different images into one image; eliminating marks on objects, on clothing or on a person’s skin; in separating specific elements such as a particular individual from the rest of a photograph and providing the authentic colour to people, objects or landscapes. It offers a wide range of file types including J-PEG, TIFF and PNG and is available for a Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac operating systems.
