If you’re a CD Baby client, you may have heard that the only digital music distributor with the word “CD” in their name is exiting the CD distribution business. 😲
To be honest, this made us a bit melancholy because it truly feels like the end of an era.
CD Baby started as a small online CD store 25 years ago, and in 2004 the company became the world’s first indie digital music distributor when it partnered with Apple for the launch of iTunes. And for the past quarter century, as other digital distributors started to crowd the scene, CD Baby was the only distributor offering artists access to streaming platforms and distribution of physical media – CDs, vinyl, cassettes, and other formats.
On June 22nd, that party comes to an end, and CD Baby will only distribute digital music to streaming platforms.
In today’s video, Disc Makers CEO Tony van Veen discusses:
• Why CD Baby exited the physical distribution game.
• What this means for you (i.e., where you should sell your physical media now).
• Whether this means the end of the compact disc.
