In this video I review a very popular retro lens Helios 44M-4. It was historically used with Zenit camera and now it is gaining popularity for using with other cameras. In this video I compare Helios 44M-4 with Helios 44-2. I show the pros as cons of the Helios 44M-4 and also show sample photos and sample video taken with Helios 44M-4. I conclude that the Helios 44M-4 is a bit sharper of the two lenses and offers a bit higher contrast. At the same time it’s build quality is a bit lower as it has wobbly aperture ring and mount. I do recommend Helios 44M-4 but I conclude that Helios 44-2 may be preferable as it has more aperture blades and is better built. The advantage of Helios 44M-4 is that it is multi-coated. At the same time it has a pin that needs to be pressed in to use the aperture blades of the lens (and this requires tweaking or a special kind of adapter).
