It took me a few weeks to make this video because this module is deep, complex, versatile, a bit intimidating for people who don't dive menus, but it's a truly valuable tool to turn your mono synth into a multi-track creative canvas. Even though there's tough competition around, I think it belongs in the top tier of modular looping. There are three official workflows, and a fourth one that's a bit undocumented (but extremely useful).
The official ones include DAW looping (count in, fixed loop length), BOSS looping (layer takes live) and Retrospective looping (Record a loop first, decide if you like to keep it later). So you'll need to figure out which workflow fits you best - and practise a lot. The fourth way is to just punch in new elements on an existing loop and creatively making a 'collage' of sounds - which is probably my favorite mode.
RYK has provided me the module for free, but I paid my dues by making this video. I am a big fan of RYK, I love the design aesthetics, but my demo unit has been used extensively, with tons of settings saved in memory I did not know about. I had a really hard time getting started and could not find a factory reset. I assumed I had to buy a USB thumbdrive, but you can save to internal memory (!). Licensing exFAT from Microsoft was too expensive for a small manufacturer, so you can only use the cheap crappy and slow FAT32 thumb drives. Time Slice has extensive support for line, modular and HOT modular inputs, so if your input CLIPS, check your inputs. So consider this video a 'getting started' video, it can do much more than I can possibly show.
I don't care too much about module ergonomics and menus, I care about results. As the module grew on me, results got better and better. It's not a conventional looper, it's a musical instrument with four sampled voices and V/OCT support. It's a tape recorder, and a dream machine. Highly recommended for pioneers and early adopters, but it may be too deep for beginners and people with no patience. I guess I've been all of those. This video is also about not giving up, having faith in the manufacturer and letting go of conditioning and expectations fed by other module designs. It's not a Morphagene, not a StarDust, a Lubadh or a BitBox. It's a RYK Time Slice.
