SP-404 Pattern Sequencer Trick → Qtz JUST the First Beat for Cleaner Looping | Beat Making Tutorial
For a long time I was having trouble recording beats in the SP-404A's Pattern Sequencer that looped cleanly. I figured my last snare was either early or late - but then it dawned on me that I was possibly also screwing up the kick on the first beat. I know quantize can sometimes be a bit of a dirty word but using it in small doses as a tool like this really helped make my beats hit harder on the one and switching between patterns smoother.
What I do is turn on QTZ (set to 4) and record just the things that hit on the first beat (kick, bass, samples etc...). Then I turn off QTZ and record the rest of the pattern.
The breakdown:
1:44 - Pattern Sequencer: Length = 2 | QTZ = 4 | Tempo = 80
With Quantize On I record the first beat only (kick, hat, bass, wah guitar & vibraslap) then hit REC to go into rehearsal mode and turn Quantize Off.
2:00 - To get a feel for the groove I jam in rehearsal mode, practicing also skipping the first beat. Warming up I start simple then get more complex with the drum pattern.
2:23 - REC Mode again, now I lay down the drums.
2:36 - Now I record the rest of the bassline.
