▶️Conservator type liquid insulated electrical transformers are a common site at many industrial plants, substations and power generation facilities. But how can you determine that your transformer (or power transformer) is healthy? Its difficult to determine the health of a transformer's internal components without shutting down the transformer, but there are many checks you can do visually which will give you a good idea of a transformer's health.
Inspecting the Immediate Area
Check the area around the transformer to ensure it is secure (fences, cameras etc.).
Check no vegetation is growing near the transformer.
Check for foreign objects such as sand, twigs and leaves, that may pose a risk to the transformer.
Are there any fire protection devices installed? What is their condition?
Inspecting the Transformer
Does the unit have signs of corrosion or oil leaks?
Does the unit exhibit abnormal noises (popping or crackling)?
Are the cooling fans working?
What is the condition of the bushings?
What is the oil level in the sight glass?
What is the magnetic oil gauge (MOG) level?
What is the highest temperature the transformer has reached in the past (see red follower needle on transformer temperature gauge)?
Check the Buchholz relay for abnormal signs (isolated valves etc.).
Check the transformer for physical damage (impact damage).
Check the silica gel breather (desiccant breather / drier breather) for saturation.
