There is an interesting argument about the number of people you need for user testing. You might not have enough data with few users but it gets too heavy on the budget with too many users.
But luckily, someone has already found the answer for us with scientific research. If you know usability, then you must know Jakob Nielsen. He is the best of the best usability expert with his most famous Nielsen’s heuristic evaluations.
He researched 83 user tests to graph a chart about the number of usability problems found and the number of test users. Then the classic marginal effect appeared in the graph, and the increment of problems found becomes smaller as more users are involved. So here is our magic number. Five. Five is enough to get most of the problems, but not too much to be heavy on the production budget. And that’s the number you might want to go for.
