Why Drakkars Were The Vikings Ultimate Weapons
Before the 11th century, Vikings were buried with their most valuable items like their ships because it was believed to give them passage for eternity and if we talked about a warrior's burial it would also include his most valuable weapons. However, their most prized possession and most powerful weapon was not a spear or an axe, but their Drakkars. But what is a Viking Drakkar?
Drakkars were the most famous Viking longboats. They were a representation of powerful Scandinavian kings. These well-armed vessels were constructed as warships specifically to raid villages and other places to gain power. While these boats were at sea for only 80% of their lives, they served as symbols of immense Scandinavian power and lion spirit, bequeathed by masterful kings such as Olaf Tryggvason.
Ancient ship burials are the primary source of ancient knowledge on longships, and they are the greatest source of information. The kings and queens were typically buried coast side, under a large burial mound in one of their Drakkar ships, which contained many of their most valuable items.
Famous for fighting with their signature longships, the Vikings would take down one town after another across parts of Europe, North Africa and even a little bit of western Asia. One way to see traces of their legacy is to admire one of these powerful vessels while admiring its vivid red sail that adorns it.
