Josh Odgers (VCDX #90) explains that in the prior vSAN OSA architecture, compression would only happen if the compression could do a 4k block down to 2k whereas with Express Storage Architecture (ESA), vSAN is now able to compress 4k blocks into 3k, 2k or 1k meaning greater efficiency can be achieved.
