Sunscreen works by providing a protective barrier on the skin that helps absorb, reflect, or scatter ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation, particularly UVA and UVB rays, can cause damage to the skin, leading to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen helps mitigate these effects. There are two main types of active ingredients found in sunscreens: chemical (organic) filters and physical (inorganic) blockers.

Chemical (Organic) Filters:
Chemical filters in sunscreen contain organic compounds that absorb UV radiation and transform it into heat, which is then released from the skin. Common chemical filters include avobenzone, octocrylene, octinoxate, and oxybenzone.
These filters are effective at absorbing either UVA or UVB radiation or a combination of both, depending on the specific chemical composition.

Physical (Inorganic) Blockers:
Physical blockers, also known as mineral sunscreens, contain active ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
These compounds create a physical barrier on the skin that reflects and scatters UV radiation, preventing it from penetrating the skin. Physical blockers provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

Broad-Spectrum Protection:
Sunscreens are often labeled with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to indicate their level of UVB protection. Additionally, sunscreens labeled as "broad-spectrum" provide protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.
UVA rays are associated with premature aging, while UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. A good sunscreen provides protection against both types of UV radiation.

Water Resistance:
Some sunscreens are labeled as water-resistant, indicating their ability to maintain effectiveness after exposure to water for a certain period. However, water-resistant sunscreens still need to be reapplied after swimming or sweating, as their effectiveness diminishes over time.

Application and Reapplication:
For optimal protection, sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin, including the face, neck, arms, and legs. It is recommended to apply sunscreen at least 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to allow it to be absorbed by the skin.
Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or more frequently if swimming, sweating, or towel-drying, as these activities can reduce its effectiveness.

Sun Protection Habits:
Sunscreen is just one component of sun protection. It is essential to complement its use with other sun-safe habits, such as seeking shade during peak sunlight hours, wearing protective clothing, and using sunglasses with UV protection.

By providing a protective barrier against harmful UV radiation, sunscreen helps reduce the risk of sun damage and provides a defense against the harmful effects of prolonged sun exposure.
