For AAPI Heritage Month, I’m celebrating it the best way I know how - by talking about Asian food and cooking.

Today, the spotlight is on a large and spiky fruit, known as jackfruit! We love it for its many uses - the ripe version is sweet and ideal for desserts, while the unripe young green jackfruit is best in savory recipes as a plant-based meat substitute. You can find this at your local Asian supermarket. I bought my jackfruit at H Mart. If you’re based in NYC, I’ve also seen it at Hong Kong Supermarket.

🍯 How to tell if jackfruit is ripe? Before cutting into it, you can check by smelling the stem end for a sweet aroma. It will also be slightly soft when you squeeze it.

🍬 What does it taste like? Some people say it tastes like bubblegum, but I think it’s more of a cross between mango and pineapple.

🥥 What is the texture like? Fibrous and crunchy

🌰 Are the seeds edible? Yes! It’s best to boil them in hot salted water for 20-30 minutes. It will taste like chestnuts and potatoes.
