Why is using a good microphone important? Audio is arguably the most important aspect of any video. People tend to navigate away from videos quickly if the audio is low quality. Most video cameras has a built in microphone, but = the quality of these is not great and, being so close to the mechanisms of the camera, sometimes picks up clicking and rubbing, and other noises. Using an external microphone avoids this problem.
What different types of microphones are there?
There are all sorts of different microphones available, and they all have use in different situations.

Shotgun Microphones
Lapel Microphones
Wireless microphones
There are other types of microphones as well, but these three are good options that will cover most situations well.
How to decide which type of microphone to use?
All three microphone types we’ve mentioned here are known as omnidirectional microphones, meaning that they capture most of the sound only from the direction that the microphone is facing.
The on board microphone attempts to capture sound from a wider range of directions, which is why, among other reasons, the recorded sound from an onboard microphone is significantly lower quality.
Deciding on which type of microphone to use can be tricky, as a lot of factors need to be taken into account, such as:
How far away from the camera you are
Any movement that you or the camera might be making
and whether or not the camera is pointed directly at you.
Once you have taken these factors into account, it’s time to decide which type of microphone will work best for your situation.
