Link to my video showing the effect compared to the default settings:    • Subnautica greater view distance

Testing a setting in the Subnautica files to increase the view distance so that landscape and grasses etc. appear further away so the pop-in is less noticable.

I guess I should have recorded it at a lower resolution as I run the game at 3840*2160 with all settings maxed out, and running OBS to record at the same time stressed my PC a little more than I expected, hence the much lower than normal frame rate.

Without OBS recording in the background, it runs a little slower than using the default settings, at around 40fps. Default settings is closer to 60fps.

Having such an old CPU could also contribute to that too, what with me only having an Intel i5-4460 :)

Anyhow, on to the settings tweak for those who're interested...

First, make sure you're running Subnautica using high settings, then close the game and make the changes below.

The settings I changed are in the "game_install_path\Subnautica\SNUnmanagedData" folder.

Open the clipmaps_high.json file in a text editor.
Then you will see the following:

"chunksPerSide":7,
"chunksVertically":7,

I changed them to say 10 for each in the first section and 14 for each in the second section.

I then changed where it said "Grass": false, to say "Grass": true,

Save the file and run Subnautica. You should then notice that the vines and grass load up a little further out, making the world look a lot more lived in.

There is a little pop-in with terrain every so often that I've noticed, but it's not too annoying to me, but if you don't like it, try using slightly lower numbers instead of 10 and 14 for the two changes.
