A briolette is type of gem cut that originated in India about 800 years ago. India was among the first place in the world to mine and export diamonds and many of them were cut in this form. A briolette cut is an elongated stone that is cut all the way around. They are similar to the crystal drops in a chandelier. They are made to be seen from all angles and often dangle from earrings or a necklace. This type of stone cut fell out of favor over the years but has become more popular recently with less expensive stones such as amethyst and citrine. Join jewelry designer Jill Maurer as she discusses the history of briolette cut gemstones.
