There are two competing theories for how life emerged in the universe: abiogenesis and panspermia. Abiogenesis suggests that life formed independently out of the primordial soup of early earth. Panspermia, on the other hand, says that life freely seeds itself across the cosmos on the backs of meteorites and space dust.
