Keep in mind your phone needs to support 5G for it to use the 5G service. The eSIM can be used on phones with or without 5G.
To upgrade from physical SIM to eSIM I called 611 and provided them my SIM EID.
They activated the new eSIM on their side and I had to power off the phone, remove the physical SIM, and power it back on. Then I followed the phone specific steps to add the eSIM to the phone.
To better secure your SIM and account, request to add a code or passphrase to your account to authorize SIM swapping changes, e.g. port outs.
After switching from an old physical SIM to eSIM my phone switched from 5G NSA to 5G SA, non-stand alone to stand alone. My phone also supports 5G UC (Ultra Capacity).
