Tokal: The Second Wife in Kazakh Culture
For centuries, Muslims have married up to four women. This tradition is considered controversial in Islam, and it remains unresolved (in Islamic circles) to this day.
Kazakhstan is now a secular state, and by law no one has the right to take a second wife; marriage must be performed in a mosque, a religious ceremony. Men sometimes marry a tokal, usually secretly, concealing it from their legal spouse.
