I had a problem with random, unexplained drops in frame rate while playing GTA V. The game would stutter. Evidently, GTA 5 does not always cooperate with applications running in the background. The solution? I have learned to alt-tab out to Windows, close programs, and then go back to the game.
In this video, the problem wasn't there, but the switch between gameplay to Windows is shown for demonstrative purposes.

Intel i7 5820k
16GB RAM
NVidia GTX 980
