In this lecture, we compare the three main options every CCNA student faces — Cisco Packet Tracer, GNS3, and EVE-NG — so you can make an informed choice, not a random one.
Each tool has strengths, trade-offs, and a specific sweet spot. By the end of this lecture, you'll know exactly which one to start with — and when (if ever) to switch.

Free, official Cisco simulator available through Cisco Networking Academy
Lightweight — runs on modest hardware, even older laptops
Simulates Cisco devices — not the real IOS, but close enough for most CCNA topics
Built-in tutorials, drag-and-drop topology builder, beginner-friendly UI
Perfect for learning fundamentals, subnetting labs, basic routing, VLANs, ACLs
⚠️ Limitation: some advanced features behave differently from real IOS
2️⃣ GNS3 (Graphical Network Simulator 3)
Free, open-source network emulator
Runs real Cisco IOS images — you must provide your own legally
Supports multi-vendor topologies — Cisco, Juniper, MikroTik, and more
Closer to real-world behavior than Packet Tracer
Requires more RAM and CPU, steeper learning curve
Excellent for CCNP-level labs and real-world scenario practice
