One day in Auschwitz
We always want to forget bad things. However, there are events we must remember so they never happen again. For Holocaust Remembrance Day, Discovery Channel will air the program "One Day in Auschwitz," featuring a former prisoner, Kitty Hort-Moxton, who will speak about one of the most horrific Nazi concentration camps. Kitty wasn't afraid to return to a place where human life was worthless, where people died daily from hunger, torture, backbreaking labor, and at the hands of the Nazis. Kitty Hort was sent to Auschwitz in 1943, when she was only 16 years old. The girl, from a Polish Jewish family, was sent to the camp with her mother. At the beginning of the war, the Horts managed to evade arrest thanks to false documents indicating their Polish origins. But they were ultimately handed over to the Nazis, and the women ended up in a concentration camp where the average life expectancy was about three months. By sheer luck, they managed to survive—a true miracle on the "conveyor belt of death," where more than 4 million people were exterminated from 1940 to 1945. After the war, Kitty moved to Britain and married. Memories of Auschwitz haunted the program's protagonist throughout her life, and now Kitty shares them with others, warning against the dangers of the seductive notion that not all people are equal.
