A lot of these earlier DBP's share a similar problem of the theme and consistency not quite being there yet. In this case, I can still kinda see what they were going for with the theme, but it doesn't seem like it was quite as cohesive as it could have been. This is a problem that becomes progressively less prevalent as the DBP series goes on, so they probably just got more practice at it.
After Stream Edit - So, either I misremembered the mapset significantly, or past me had so much of a problem navigating Trenchgore that I ended up misremembering how the whole mapset looked. While the first level does feel pretty bland and the aforementioned Trenchgore is extremely visually busy compared to a lot of the wad, with the benefit of hindsight I can see that the theme is not as fragmented as I thought it was in this set. Does this mean future mapsets won't be as bad as I remembered them, too? Only time will tell.
