This animation illustrates the synthesized waveform by a multilevel inverter that consists of 5 H-bridges with equal dc voltage. By changing the phase shift from 0 to 2*pi, the synthesized waveform and its spectrum vary accordingly.
Although the commonly chosen phase-shift angle is 2*pi/5 rad or 72 degrees, it is clear that other phase angles would achieve the same harmonic cancellation effect that results in the first cluster of harmonics are around 5 times the switching frequency.
The switching frequency of each H-bridge is chosen to be 1080 Hz and the fundamental frequency is 60 Hz.
