Improve SEO by Testing Site Performance with WebPageTest
Page load time is a key user experience signal used by Google to rank web pages. Most marketers and SEO experts know performance matters, but don't seem to know how to properly measure page load performance.
WebPageTest is my favorite tool to measure overall web site performance. It provides many detailed metrics that help yo identify performance issues you may have.
Unfortunately most online marketers don't understand what page load time really it. They assume it has everything to do with a fast server.
This is not true.
Time to first byte, or the time it takes your server to respond to a request for your page accounts for 5-20% of a typical page's load time.
Knowing how your page is rendered is more valuable. Excess and poorly written javaScript and CSS account for most of the wasted time loading a web page.
WebPageTest is a free, online tool, anyone can use to diagnose web performance problems so your pages can rank better.
The problem is WebPageTest provides so much information it can be overwhelming. In this video I review some of the key, top level reporting features that will help you identify common problems your pages may have so you can improve your page load performance for better SEO.
