Today's theme: shift happens — especially the AI-driven, unexpected shifts. Three events, each with my Take, then my Overall Take: IBM, Meta, and Microsoft.
1. IBM's sales shift dramatically — the biggest stock drop in its history. Down over 25%, a quarter-trillion-dollar company that shed ~$50 billion in a day, with management admitting "we faltered." The culprit: enterprises shifting budgets from legacy IT to AI.
MP Take: IBM is the sharpest data point yet to enterprises tilting their budgets toward AI. It echoes the SaaS-pocalypse selloff — likely overdone on the way down, as it can be on the way up (not stock advice). None of this is binary; over time the answer is hybrid, AI built on top of legacy systems, and IBM has room to participate. But it's a historic Dow component, and the first of many software and hardware names to get this volatility.
2. Meta shifts its AI-data-center siting strategy. On its ~$145B/year build-out, Meta put ~$40 billion of data centers around Louisiana with a notably local, community-first approach — a shift from pedal-to-the-metal.
MP Take: Multi-gigawatt data centers at $50B-plus per gigawatt take years of local permitting, and resistance is rising — New York just enacted a one-year moratorium. So it's notable Zuckerberg is using a defter local touch even as he moves aggressively. Every hyperscaler will have to execute this way. You can't rent capacity you can't get permitted and powered.
3. Microsoft accelerates its shift to enterprise customers — with a new Nadella essay. Satya Nadella's "The Reverse Information Paradox" (a not-too-subtle "RIP") positions Microsoft with the enterprises deploying AI and away from the frontier-model sellers — Anthropic and OpenAI, both close partners.
MP Take: He's picking a side with a leg in each camp. It echoes Palantir's Alex Karp: enterprises risk losing their IP and data to the frontier labs, who "hoover up" their business knowledge and may compete with them later — so "trust us and Azure" instead. It's one of the oldest strategies in the book, and an "Us vs Them" play that has worked for millennia. No reason it won't again.
MP OVERALL TAKE: All three show how fast big tech adjusts strategy to not be buffeted by the AI winds. IBM is on the receiving end; Meta and Microsoft are adjusting ahead of them. Expect a lot more of these shifts — quarter over quarter, and over the rest of this decade. Strategy in this wave is no longer a five-year plan; it's a quarterly reflex.
GADGET AI — AI leads to 'AI-Defined Vehicles' (ADVs), via Nvidia, Tesla, Google and many in China. A detailed Decoder interview with the head of Nvidia's AI-Defined Vehicles unit (Orin-to-Thor chips, Alpamayo software) — Nvidia systems now run in 80-plus automakers worldwide, including China's BYD.
MP Take: Nvidia is the most under-appreciated player in self-driving — less hyped than Tesla, Waymo or Uber, but building a global open-source platform for automakers everywhere, especially China. AI redefining auto mobility is a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity — but it'll still take at least five more years to go from Level 2++ today (hands on the wheel) to L4 and beyond. Robotaxis included.
CLOSING Qs
MP's biggest surprise? Even Nvidia runs short of compute internally, and Jensen sometimes has to allocate it — a reminder we're supply-constrained ("RAMageddon") for the next two-three years, endemic across tech.
The self-driving issue that riles MP most? The almost-religious Lidar debate. It has dropped in price by multiples and shrunk to the chip level; now New Jersey is on the threshold of requiring it for self-driving and robotaxis, with New York considering the same. If one domino drops, Lidar may become a US requirement — and even Tesla may have to change its mind beyond Level 3.
