As protests and conversations on racism continue worldwide after the death of George Floyd, many artists have been using their platforms to spread messaging and opening their wallets to help. The Weeknd donated 5 hundred thousand dollars US to organizations advocating for racial equality and assisting people impacted by the protests sparked by the death of George Floyd. He donated $200,000 to Black Lives Matter, $200,000 to Colin Kaepernick Know Your Rights Campaign Legal Defense Initiative and $100,000 to National Bail Out. Drake donated $100,000 to National Bail Out. (0:12)

A number of artists have left their homes in isolation to join the protests going on around the United States and Canada. Artists like Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, J.Cole, Ariana Grande, Yungblud and Halsey have all attended protests.

Halsey posted a lot about her experience online, including showing that police officers fired rubber bullets at her and others while their hands were up and they weren’t moving. She has also been using her platform to spread information about people who have attended protests, what medical supplies others should bring to help and her and Yungblud have even helped aid protestors themselves. CHUM 104.5 Morning Show host Jamar McNeil has been speaking this week about race inequality. Jamar got really candid on his show when talking about the issues that he has faced in his lifetime as a black man.

“Those days when you woke up and didn’t feel threatened just walking out of your door, when you didn’t feel threatened walking on your own property, driving in your own car. That is a privilege you’ve had. I want you to entertain for a second that maybe you lived in a reality that a lot of people don’t live in.”

Jamar moved to Canada after getting his job at CHUM and said even though Canada is often thought of as having a reputation of not being “as racist” as the United States there are definitely moments where he has experienced racism here as well. (1:42)

K-pop fans used their power in numbers for good - and managed to drown out racists who were trying to use the hashtag white lives matter- They didn’t want the people using the hashtag to be able to spread more of a racist message so they all decided to spam the hashtag with videos of their favourite artists and memes. They also did this with often weaponized blue lives matter and MAGA.

It’s so amazing to see them realize that with such large numbers they can really have an impact and make a difference which is exactly what they are doing. (3:14)
