How the idea of “Google for log files” was born
Founders of Splunk
Splunk was founded by Rob Das and Eric Swan.
They started working together in the early 1990s and officially founded Splunk in 2004 after years of research and discussions.
Why the name “Splunk”?
When the founders spoke to 60–70 companies, most said monitoring logs felt like digging through caves.
Cave exploration is called “spelunking”, and that’s where the name Splunk came from!
Problems Splunk Solved:
Manual and unstructured log files
Difficult log maintenance
Poor collaboration and troubleshooting
The Big Idea
Splunk was designed as “Google for log files” – search, analyze, and understand machine data easily and fast.
