Learn about standard patch orders, input lists, and stage plots for live sound reinforcement. As a production provider, one thing that really makes the day go quicker is when bands have stage plots and input lists. It's even better when they follow industry norms with their patch order.
With digital consoles, soft-patching is always possible, but at the root, mic lines need to be hard-patched to begin with. Consistency in this procedure can help with efficiency and troubleshooting. Multi-band festival stages can have several bands and performers throughout the day. Usually with limited changeover time. There's no time for mistakes and the margin of error is small.
A properly advanced show will include an input list and stage plot. At the very least, an input list. These documents will show the microphones, monitors, DIs, and power needed for each band, and where they are needed. They can be elaborately made, or very basic. The important part is that they contain the information that the production company, the PA provider, needs to prepare for each band before the band even gets on stage.
This isn't just for rock bands and festivals. For any band or tech who thinks they may one day have to interact with an outside PA provider, this info is relevant. As mentioned in the video, it's easy to get into habits, sometimes bad habits, that won't translate well on professional stages.
Churches, clubs, volunteer techs, students, bands, duos, etc. can all benefit from learning about standard practices in the touring world which is what this live sound tutorial seeks to show and teach.
