Domain name? Domain? Hosting? DNS. You're ready to create a website, but if you don't know anything about domain names or hosting, you've come to the right place. In this video, I'll talk about domain names, hosting, and DNS records.

First, let's start with the domain name. Website addresses like ekşisözlük.com, shiftdelete.net, meb.gov.tr, teyit.org are all domain names. You can buy domain names from companies like Godaddy, isimtescil, and turhost.
You'll notice I didn't add "www" to the beginning of any of the domain names when listing them. Because it's not part of the domain name. As the "World Wide Web" gained popularity in the 1990s, "www" was advertised to indicate that the domain name was a website, but today it's a generic part of the web, just like the Selpak brand.
When purchasing a domain name, you'll be asked to enter your NS (name server) information. The NS information is the information that determines where on the internet your domain name will be managed and by which hosting provider. If you enter Turhost's NS information into a domain name you purchased from GoDaddy, you will now control the domain from Turhost. If you forward the NS information for a domain name you purchased from Turhost to GoDaddy, you will control it from there.
In other words, the NS information determines where you will manage a domain name. The NS information does not affect your domain name payments. While the NS information for a domain name you purchased from GoDaddy points to Turhost, you will process the NS information through GoDaddy when renewing the domain name.
Now, let's talk about hosting.
We entered the NS information when purchasing a domain name. This NS information is usually where our "hosting" is located. When someone types in your domain name to access your website, they read the NS information and find out where the website is located. Similarly, when they type in your address to send you an email, the email is sent through the NS information and find out where your email server is located.
Are you a little confused? So, let me try to explain it again with a telephone analogy. Let your mobile number be your domain name. Therefore, your mobile phone will be your hosting. Neither is truly useful without the other. When you insert your SIM card into your phone, your phone rings when someone calls you. So, when you connect your domain name to hosting with NS, what's entered into your domain name reaches your web server. Then, your mobile phone handles all the related operations, whether it's SMS or calls.
So, how do these computers know whether to access a website, a subdomain, or an email from a domain name? Years ago, the scientists and engineers who developed this system developed a concept and created something called "DNS Zone Records." These are still used today. So, what is this?
You may have seen things like A, CNAME, MX, and TXT when using cPanel or other hosting management interfaces.
An A record is the most commonly used record type and directs a domain name or subdomain to an IP address. CNAME records are also widely used and direct a domain name or subdomain to a host address.
An MX record directs the domain name to the email server associated with it. For example, if you purchased your hosting from Turhost, you would direct your email infrastructure to Yandex or Gmail using MX records.
All of these are called DNS records. When a change is made to DNS records, it takes some time for it to be reflected everywhere. Therefore, it's beneficial to plan ahead to prevent any changes from disrupting your business.
