While rafting down a mountain river, Dasha falls into the water and is swept away by the current. Her body is never found, and Dasha is presumed dead. Her friend Lera, long in love with Andrey, Dasha's fiancé, consoles him as best she can, and soon after returning to Moscow, they begin living together. Two years later, Andrey proposes to Lera... But with only two weeks left until the wedding, Andrey comes across an article in a Karelian newspaper in which he recognizes Dasha in a photograph.
Andrey easily finds both the village and the girl in the photograph. However, it turns out her name is Anya, not Dasha, and she has a common-law husband, Semyon.
