Highlights / knockouts tribute to one of the greatest British boxers of all time; Prince Naseem Hamed (Arabic; نسيم حميد) commonly known as “Naz”. Hamed was a tremendous fighter in his prime and throughout his career, known for his flamboyant antics especially his grand ring entrances such as entrances on a flying carpet, an elevator and reenactment of Michael Jackson’s music video of his legendary hit song “Thriller”.
Additionally, he often somersaults over the top rope into the ring and often celebrate his victories with multiple back flips and somersaults.
He is one of the most athletically gifted fighters of all time (often compared with Roy Jones Jr.) with a highly unorthodox southpaw fighting style who possessed amazing one punch knockout power in both hands with superior speed and precision as well as incredible cat-like mobility, often dominating his oppositions with early knockout victories. He also had a sturdy chin and amazing stamina; a truly gifted all around fighter.
At only 7 years of age, he started boxing when his father Sal sent him to train at Brendan Ingle’s St. Thomas Boxing school gym in Sheffield where Herol “Bomber” Graham also trained in and was a star there. Graham was Hamed’s biggest influence which helped Hamed developed his hands down, elusively unorthodox southpaw fighting style.
By 12 years old, Hamed was a star amateur and finished his amateur career in 1992 with a record of 62(18)-5 and achieved the following credentials:
1) National U11 Light Flyweight Champion (1985)
2) National U12 Light Flyweight Champion (1986)
3) European Cup U15 Light Flyweight Finalist in Glasgow (1986)
4) National U13 Light Flyweight Champion (1987)
5) National U15 Light Flyweight Championship - 3rd Place (1988)
6) National U15 Light Flyweight Champion (1989)
7) European Cup U17 Light Flyweight Finalist in Manchester (1989)
8) National U16 Light Flyweight Champion (1990)
9) European Cup U19 Flyweight Finalist (1990)
10) Junior ABA Flyweight Champion (1991)
11) Junior ABA Flyweight Champion (1992)
He turned pro in April 1992 and retired in May 2002 where he achieved tremendous success whilst being highly dominant throughout his reign as world champion.
The following are titles won by Naz during his 10 year pro career;
1) EBU (European) Bantamweight Championship
2) WBC International Super Bantamweight Championship
3) WBO Featherweight Championship
4) IBF Featherweight Championship
5) WBC Featherweight Championship
He had notable victories over Remigio Molina, Juan Polo-Perez, Steve Robinson, Daniel Alicea, Manuel Medina, Billy Hardy, Tom Johnson, Wilfredo Vázquez, Wayne McCullough, Paul Ingle, Cesar Soto, Vuyani Bungu, Augie Sanchez and Kevin Kelley.
He retired as world champion after fighting his last fight in May 2002, winning a UD against Manuel Calvo to bag the vacant IBO World Featherweight Championship.
He finished his career with a final record of 36(31)-1 with his lone loss against Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera, who would retire as world champion in 3 weight divisions; Super Bantamweight, Featherweight, and Super Featherweight.
Naz also has one of the highest knockout ratios in the sport at 84%, and 24 of his knockout wins were within 4 rounds. It is also noteworthy to mention that Naz was unbeaten in world title fights with a record of 16(14)-0.
He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015.
