The pangolin is an amazing mammal that looks like a cross between an armadillo and an anteater. It is a small animal covered in hard scales that form a kind of armor. These scales are made of keratin, the same substance as human fingernails. Pangolins curl up into a tight ball when they feel threatened to protect themselves from predators.
They have a long sticky tongue that they use to catch ants and termites, which are the basis of their diet. Pangolins are nocturnal and have a rather secretive behavior, which makes them difficult to observe. These animals live in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. Unfortunately, pangolins are endangered due to illegal hunting and trade, as their meat and scales are highly prized in some cultures.
