Blender Fur Curve System Tutorial. This is a long, slow demo of my procedure for body fur. I jumped around and went slow, with less editing, so you can see how to tweak the setup as you go. Hopefully this helps understand the workload and the process.

The curves system is easy to adjust on the fly, and no part of it is permanent or destructive.
