The history of the full size vessel
Steam Launch Bat was buit by the famous firm of Brockbank of Windermere to the design of
her owner, Alfred Sladen.
In 1904 Issac Story and Jack Kitchin used "Bat" for their experiments in radio control. She was
steered from a wireless mast on Queen Adelaide' Hill while she steamed round the north lake
with only a stoker aboard, a remarkable achievement for the time. "Bat" is believed to be the
first vessel steered by radio control and thereby richly deserves a place in our history books.
