Good evening, listeners, and welcome to a very special episode of Horror Hill. I’m your host, Erik Peabody, and over the next two weeks, we’re going to be covering something a bit outside of our normal content.
It is with great pleasure that I present to you “The Events at Poroth Farm” by TED Klein.
“The Events at Poroth Farm” is a novella that was released in 1972, and is considered a classic in the horror and weird fiction genres, modernizing the foundation established by HP Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, Clark Ashton Smith, and others. Mr. Klein is himself a scholar in these
areas, and this story includes a number of references to earlier tales of gothic horror.
While this is very much a book that you can pick up and enjoy without any outside knowledge, having some insight into these specific pieces of literature will provide a deeper appreciation for “The Events at Poroth Farm,” and along those lines, I’d also like to announce that Horror Hill is

“The Events at Poroth Farm” opens with our narrator, Jeremy, as he sits in a sweltering hotel room in Flemington, New Jersey. Jeremy is haunted, both by the recent experience she had on a farm in the rural New Jersey countryside, and also perhaps by something more. He tells us that he is an English teacher in New York, about how he planned to take the summer off to review reading materials for the next school year, and how he discovered the perfect place to do so: a small outbuilding on a farm owned by Sarr and Deborah Poroth, two members of a Mennonite community called Gilead. As Jeremy takes us through the journal he kept during his time on Poroth farm, we are brought along with him as he relives the strange and terrible events that took place there
