WHY you should VALUE your comfort zone as an artist.

Often at times, we are told by our art teachers and higher ups that we should always be drawing outside of our comfort zones. While it is extremely beneficial to challenge ourselves and broaden our horizons, it’s unrealistic to think that that’s the ONLY thing we should be doing as artists.

✏️ KEEP a sketchbook or place where you can draw whatever it is you like. Whether if that be girls, animals, plants, robots, whatever — you have your safe space to keep drawing without others judging you of only being capable of drawing one thing. At the end of the day, if drawing your favorite thing is what gets you to lay that like down, do it!

✨ BALANCE out art projects that have a mix of things you love to draw, and some that may be more challenging. Going full force into drawing things you struggle with may not always be the answer, but gradually sprinkling them into art you are already familiar with making could ease you into it. For ex: I suck at airplane drawings! But in each spread, I try to incorporate a tiny or minor drawing of an airplane.

🌈 Make a concentration of artwork based on your comfort zone / things you love to draw! In college, while I was always working on other art assignments for school, I always kept sketchbooks where I only drew very fashionable people / drawings of girls. These sketchbooks became known as the “B*tches” series of sketchbook videos and downloadable files I now sell on gumroad and have made me thousands of dollars after just sharing it online. You never know where your comfort zone can take you!
