For nearly 2,000 years, the Dead Sea Scrolls remained hidden in the caves of the Judean Desert. They contain some of the oldest surviving biblical manuscripts ever discovered — but scientists have now found a completely new way to investigate their secrets.

Instead of studying only the ancient writing, researchers analyzed microscopic traces of DNA preserved in the animal skins used to make the scrolls.

And the results raised a fascinating question: *Were all of these ancient manuscripts really created in the community near Qumran?*

Using ancient DNA and genetic analysis, researchers were able to compare fragments based on the animals whose skins became the parchment. The results helped scientists determine which pieces were related, separate fragments that had previously been debated, and identify evidence that some scrolls may have originated outside Qumran.

One of the most intriguing discoveries involved fragments of the Book of Jeremiah. Genetic evidence suggested that different versions circulated in ancient Judea at the same time — offering a new perspective on how biblical texts were produced, transmitted, and preserved during the Second Temple period.

In this documentary, we explore:

• How scientists extracted ancient DNA from 2,000-year-old parchment
• Why animal DNA can act like a genetic fingerprint for ancient scroll fragments
• The mystery surrounding the origins of the Dead Sea Scrolls
• What the DNA revealed about the Book of Jeremiah
• Why some scrolls appear to have come from outside Qumran
• What this means for our understanding of ancient Judaism and biblical history
• How genetics is transforming archaeology and ancient manuscript research

The Dead Sea Scrolls have always been one of archaeology's greatest puzzles. Now, DNA is giving researchers an entirely new tool for putting the pieces together.

*The writing tells us what the ancient people believed. The DNA can tell us where the parchment itself came from.*

Watch until the end to discover what scientists learned when they looked beneath the ancient words.
