Krasnogorsk is a former uranium mining town in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan. It was once a closed community, accessible only with a pass. Hundreds of specialists lived and worked here, and schools, hospitals, and clubs were built. After the collapse of the USSR, life came to a standstill: businesses closed, and residents left. Today, only a few families remain in Krasnogorsk.
The Tengri TV team traveled over seven hours from Astana to show what this forgotten uranium town looks like today—and why it still bears traces of human life.
📌 In this story:
🚗 The road through Yesil and Kalachi—40 kilometers of potholed highway, which we traveled for two hours.
🏗️ The history of Krasnogorsk—a uranium mining town founded in 1964, closed and strategically important.
🏚️ How the city emptied out – the end of Moscow funding and the mass exodus of residents in the 1990s.
🏠 What remains inside the houses – old things, graffiti, and traces of a past life.
🎥 A ruined movie theater and hospital – buildings that were once bustling with life.
👵 An interview with Lidiya Alekseyevna – how the remaining residents live today.
😴 Sleeping sickness and resettlement – the resettlement program in Yesil, the second wave of exodus.
📺 Watch Tengri TV's report on Krasnogorsk, a closed uranium mining town that was once the pride of the country and has now become a reminder of how quickly human labor is disappearing.
The next episode is about the village of Kalachi and the fate of its residents.
