Mary, excluding the brief and controversial reigns of Empress Matilda and the deposed Lady Jane Grey, was England's first queen regnant.
Eldest heir to Henry VIII, the only child of his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon, she had to fight throughout her life to assert her position after her mother was repudiated.
When Mary became queen at the age of 37, she set out to destroy what her father, and then her half-brother, Edward VI, had built to convert the nation to Protestantism. She was a devout Catholic and became known as Bloody Mary for burning approximately 300 Protestants at the stake during her brief five-year reign.
