Frankenstein is one of the greatest classics of science fiction. More than 200 years after the publication of Mary Shelley's novel, the creature continues to appear in the genre. But each era seems to find a new body for it.
In this video, we'll go back to 1818 to understand how Frankenstein helped shape science fiction and how its creature has transformed over the centuries: from Mary Shelley's monster to Hollywood's Frankenstein, from Bernie Wrightson's illustrations to David Sala's reinterpretation, from the robots of R.U.R. to the genetically modified creatures and artificial life forms of modern science fiction.
We'll also go through works like The Island of Dr. Moreau, Rocky Horror, R.U.R., Blade Runner, Jurassic Park, and Ex Machina to understand why the idea of Frankenstein remains so present when science fiction begins to ask what happens when we create a new life form and who will be responsible for it.
