A simple method for processing sheepskin

Any hide dressing begins with soaking the preserved hide. Soaking the hide is the first water operation. The goal is to soak the hide over the entire surface and bring it back to its original, fresh state. Then comes fleshing, removing all meat and fat deposits from the flesh side. To quickly remove these deposits, a fleshing machine is used in production. Home craftsmen use a variety of tools for this purpose: a scythe, a two-handed scraper or a dead end, a clamp on a pole, and others. Then, partial removal of surface fat by washing the hide in a solution of degreasers and detergents is carried out – this is mainly done at home. Degreasing the hides. Detergents for tanning hides at home are mostly readily available. Then comes pickling and tanning. A combined tanning method. Pickling with sulfuric acid. Tanning the hides in a chrome tanning solution. The hides' welding temperature increases, making them resistant to aggressive environments. Another important step is fatliquoring. The fats in the fat mixture lubricate the collagen fibers, making the hide more water-resistant and preventing the fibers from sticking together when dry. Then comes the final stage: drying and breaking the hides. At home, due to the lack of the necessary equipment, this involves breaking and kneading the hide manually against the sharp edge of a metal disk or on a wooden masher. Dressing ram hides and goat skins at home requires one method of tanning – that of tanning sheepskin.
