ProRail's data liberation journey
ProRail is responsible for the railway network in the Netherlands. For 15 years it worked with service providers on 5 year contracts to maintain the 5,000 switches in their railway system. The service providers shared their sensor-based switch data with ProRail. Over the years it learned that data shared this way was not a centralized view of the health of its switching systems, and limited its ability to innovate. So with the help of service firm CGI Group Inc. ProRail created a common operational picture for rail assets across their network using the PI System. ProRail reports it has been a data liberation journey to one source of information for all stakeholders in the Dutch rail infrastructure.
