Quite often, they are hung up on landing a "Project Manager" title.
And I understand, achieving the title can be something of a status symbol in certain circles, improve your financial situation, and grant you access to certifications and other benefits to help you further your career.
But the truth is, "Project Manager" isn't always the most logical starting point.
There are tons of positions out there which have elements of project management without the title. And these are often a great place to start for beginning project managers.
Try titles like:
Project Coordinator
Project Assistant
Project Admin
Implementation Specialist
Account Specialist
And the list goes on...
