I remember when I arrived at the University of Cape Town as an undergraduate for the first time in January 1975 I was struck by the number of blokes ('ous' or 'ouens') who introduced themselves to me: "Hah. Mah nayeem's Mark" - I thought 'Mark' was a common name in English South Africa; until I realised that they were actually called 'Mike'!
