FL Studio Tutorials: Gates/Expanders
Compressors, limiters, de-essers, gates, and expanders are all examples of dynamic processors. Dynamic processors modify the dynamics of an input in some way. Gates and expanders are similar to compressors, although, their thresholds lay below most of the input's volume. Gates are most often use to "gate" out noise from a recording where an amp or mic has a noticeably high noise floor. Expanders do exactly the opposite, a signal is made louder beneath the threshold. Expanders are also often referred to as "upward compressors."
