While it bears the Cyberpunk genre on the surface, Serial Experiments Lain is an exploration of reality, identity, religion and fear. The story revolves around Lain, a fourteen-year old girl who receives an email in her inbox from a fellow schoolmate by the name of Chisa Yomoda. Chisa claims to be coming back from the dead and talks about a Wired world without distinctions between reality and fantasy. The Wired is similar to the Internet, but far more extensive in scope with access to media and communications devices around the globe.
